Softball and Strange Animals

Softball

I didn’t do as well this week – I played 3 innings but somehow only got 1 AB which I crushed – straight up to the shortstop (I made it to first before he caught it). So, my average sinks to mediocre baseball levels (and sub-mediocre softball levels).

…and the weird NJ animal sightings continue

First it was the alligator in Haddonfield, now it’s a blank panther in Vineland (well, technically, the panther was first, but I heard about it second). What’s going on with the wildlife these days. I thought it strange to have a Delaware cougar a few years back, but it seems that NJ is attracting all of the fun animals. In fact, I just learned that New Jersey had its own mountain lion. Like I said in a previous post, all we need is an elephant and an ostrich, and we have the Animals Crackers box…

Now, it’s almost a certainty that these animals were all released pets (a slightly larger chance for the cougar to be wild, but still almost non-existant). But I have to say that I actually find it a bit enjoyable to know that these things could be around. Now, I know that they present safety issues, and pet owners are going to be a little more edgy, but nature is supposed to be wild, and maybe – just maybe – people need to accept that and learn to live with it the way they do out west.

  • Sorry to hear you didn’t play as well as you hoped. I still think your time to shine is ahead of you.

All the hiking and biking I’ve done lately has served as a reminder about the natural state of things, and when I think about wildlife, I realize how much we’re on their turf. Maybe that’s less true when people release pets that wouldn’t normally live in a region, but the idea behind it stands.

It really makes me angry when people will get pets they have no way of caring for, and when they get in over their head, release the animals. It’s just another way people are selfish and irresponsible and don’t consider the consequences of their actions — impacting both the animals and other people.

It’s really strange how many odd animal sightings there have been in your area. I wonder how often stuff like this happens without my even noticing — I don’t follow the news very much.

  • Dude, you’re a reincarnation of Steve Jeltz…seriously get some jheri curl…stat

  • I’m telling you, Von Hayes. VON HAYES. Or maybe Rick Schu.
