Glad to see you’re back.

Glad to see you're back.

Aplomado Falcon
Falco femoralis

This is probably one of the best shots I got on our trip to south Texas last week. We saw a ton of stuff, including a lot of really good looks at things we’d seen before and 40+ species that were new to me. But this was a highlight.

Aplomado Falcons once ranged much of the American southwest, but were pretty much wiped out in the early 1900’s. Recent reintroduction efforts are going strong, and today you can – rarely – see them back into their old range. One of the best places to see them is Laguna Atascosa along the coast between South Padre Island and Los Fresnos. We got to see TWO of them within minutes of each other.

Definitely worth a look at the large version.

  • Woah, that guy is pretty cool Hope you had a good trip!

  • I saw the shot of that black striped snake, that’s really cool. I was amazed at how different the species were down there. In the span of two months I saw my first scorpion, wild tarantuala, coyote, and a garter snake slithered into our apartment. If a dinosaur was on my couch in the morning, I wouldn’t have thought it was truly that out of place.

  • Fantastic! That’s a pretty cool bird, although the one with the hawks on your flickr page is cooler to me.

You should stop being so down on yourself about doing “documentarian” photography. There’s nothing wrong with that — I’d say it’s essential. I’m trying to get better at doing that kind of thing. I like artsy shots, but a close-up picture of a wall only goes so far in capturing the essence of an abandoned house.

  • I bet you took many wonderful shots! But this is a stunning one!
