I have it on good authority…

that I’m a dumbass. In the immortal words of “That 70’s Show”:

Eric: I don’t know. You know, it seems like bad things are always happening to me, like I have bad luck or something.
Red: [slowly] Son, you don’t have bad luck. The reason that bad things happen to you is because you’re a dumbass.

Big Day at Cape May - Forsythe

Marty July 15th, 2008

Snowy ... in July? After our trip to Cape May, we decided to head to old standby Forsythe NWR in Brigantine to find some shorebirds. We had good success with the insects at Cape May, but not so much with the birds. So, we figured we could get all 3 at Forsythe although we would focus on the birds. Continue Reading »

Big Day at Cape May

Marty July 15th, 2008

Familiar enough Last year my wife and I spent a long weekend at Cape May to celebrate our 5th anniversary; this year, we couldn’t do awhile weekend but we wanted to continue the tradition. I wanted to get really early so that we could be there at sunrise; Shari wanted to get up just before sunrise and make it down there early-is in the morning. We compromised and did what she wanted. Odonata Days

Marty July 9th, 2008

Forktail and Friend Okay, I figured that it was about time I posted something again. It’s been an early turn to the summer doldroms, and I haven’t been motivated to get off of my butt long enough to write. I’ve got about a half-dozen 50%-done posts to catch up on one of these days (it’s amazing how much time one can lose playing a simple game of Civilization IV. So while I haven’t been writing, I have been going through a lot of archived shots of dragonflies and damselflies … and I’ll probably have more by the end of Shari and my trip to Cape May on Friday (and/or Saturday). However, I think I’ll start it off with some more local odonates.

REVIEW: Web Form Design - Filling in the Blanks

Marty June 27th, 2008

I just got done a great book on building usable forms - Luke Wroblewski’s “Web Form Design - Filling in the Blanks”. It was a really well-done, interesting book on a less than interesting topic (well, to most people) - in fact, it’s one of the best usability books I’ve read in terms of giving quick, easy-to-read, usable information. From my review on Goodreads.com:

“Good or bad, there aren’t many books that I can use for my job that I go through quickly. There’s just something about a limit to my absorption of information from these books that makes me take my time to get through them. However, that was not a problem with this book. Chock full of good information, Wroblewski manages to make it a quick, easy and yet informative read that only took me 2 days cover-to-cover.”

You can see more on Luke’s website, to get a feel for the book.

Some Days

+1, -1

Marty June 25th, 2008

The last week has been one of those weeks that tries men’s souls - and women’s, for that matter. But I’ve vowed to myself that I’m going to be more positive, so I’m going to try to find the silver lining in all of the crap that’s been happening. Warning: This is more than a little bit of a bitch session … don’t say I didn’t warn you. I just needed to vent a bit. For something more amusing, look at my next post Continue Reading »

Oh Boy!

Marty June 19th, 2008

The Waiting THIS is why my wife is such a good photographer. I mean, who would have thought to get a shot like this at a wedding. But I think it’s hysterical. If you like it, be sure to check out her other shots from the wedding, too.

Due to some family qualms about these images, they have been taken down. Some people just can’t take a joke.

Update 6/26: here are the pictures again. Long story.

Wacky and Wonderful Wedding Weekend

Marty June 18th, 2008

Well, my cousin got married on Saturday, and it took a whole weekend to fit in all of the festivities. With relatives pouring in from everywhere (most of her mom’s family is from Florida, my sister and family live in Georgia, and her sister had to come back from the Peace Corps in Ecuador), they made the most of having everybody being in the same place. The party started with post-rehearsal munchies and pool time on Friday night, ran through the wedding on Saturday and concluded on Sunday afternoon with the post-wedding brunch. It was great to see everyone, but man am I exhausted. I can only imagine how much Erin and Chas needed that honeymoon in Puerto Rico at this point. Continue Reading »

Best laid plans … and then there’s my father

Marty June 13th, 2008

My sister, brother-in-law and nephew are all up in PA this week for my cousin Erin’s wedding, and for weeks I’ve been trying to figure out the schedule so that a) I could get to see them and b) we could take them for the ethnic dinners we promised when we visited in April (for some reason they can’t get good Indian or Thai out in rural Georgia - go figure). As the days grew closer to their arrival, I tried to get an idea of the schedule and worked with my father to figure out what would be the best days to go to the Franklin Institute and the Natural History museum across the street with Caleb who’s 2 1/2 going on 5. Two weeks ago, it was fairly set we would go on Friday. A week ago, it appeared it would be Monday. Last weekend it was back to Friday (aka today). Last night it was “probably tomorrow” (again, aka today).

This morning, it was 10:30 and they still hadn’t left the house. They were still going to see my grandfather, which meant that instead of meeting in Philly by noon, they wouldn’t be there until at least 1 or later. And we still had to go to the rehearsal party at my aunt’s tonight - leaving scant time for doing the Franklin Institute, let alone that AND the museum. My father is notoriously late and takes an hour to get ready for anything, so I’m a little frustrated. Why?

Because it’s frickin’ 12:30 already and they still haven’t started moving toward Philly yet. Suddenly, my ONE day with Caleb - a day I took off of work for - is becoming the ‘hi Caleb, bye Caleb’ event. At this point, Shari can’t even go because she has to go to the rehearsal dinner to take pictures.

I really wish people would get their frickin’ acts together sometimes.

Quite of the Day

“It’s not that I don’t enjoy getting involved in a great story, or caught up in an engaging article, but I have the attention span of a cat at dusk, cranked up on Shrimp Medley, during a massive bird migration.”
