Forsythe Meet-up

Had a good time getting out to Forsythe NWR and meeting some of the folks on Flickr (many of whom are also on here). Though the weather was changing constantly throughout the day (overcast gave way to sunny, which then became very windy, then turned sunny again, etc.), it was a really nice day of birding. PhotoPatty (and Al) Visit NJ

On Monday, one of Shari and my Flickr friends, PhotoPatty, was in town with her husband Al, and we decided to get together so that I could show them around the birding hot spots in NJ. Or rather, some of the coastal hot spots (such as they are in the middle of summer). Continue reading

Shark!

Shark at Forsythe NWR

I was guiding PhotoPatty and Al around Forsythe NWR when she suddenly points down into the water and says, "I think that’s a shark!". If I hadn’t seen it, I would never have thought I would see a shark (let alone 2, maybe 3) in the east pool of Forsythe NWR.

Wonders of a Weekend Off

It was a good weekend – especially since it was 3 days long. Shari and I figured that we would spend at least one day out on the road, and to avoid shore traffic, Sunday seemed the best choice. That being determined, I spent Saturday mowing the lawn, cleaning up the yard, cleaning and fixing the gutters, filling the feeders and some other basic duties around the house. Shari did her part by cleaning up the kitchen, installing new shelves under the sinks and washing the windows. By the time we were done, it felt like a full, satisfying day. We still had other stuff we wanted to get done on Monday – including going to Home Depot to get the materials to redo our door frames and baseboards, but we figured we would do that later. Big Day at Cape May – Forsythe

Snowy ... in July? After our trip to Cape May, we decided to head to old standby Forsythe NWR in Brigantine to find some shorebirds. We had good success with the insects at Cape May, but not so much with the birds. So, we figured we could get all 3 at Forsythe although we would focus on the birds. Continue reading

Mutual of Brigantine’s Wild Kingdom

Mutual of Brigantine's Wild Kingdom

Life ain’t always pretty. While we were driving around Forsythe NWR last weekend, we saw a lot of cool things, enjoyed some sun, smelled some god-awful stuff (“It smells like dead feet” I said, once; later I followed that up with “It smells like rancid toe cheese”. Disgusting, but you know exactly what I mean, don’t you?), and saw some interesting things. One of them was a bit of nature at work in the form of one of the preserves top garbage collectors – the gulls. Continue reading

A Day at Forsythe NWR

common yellowthroat After far too long a time, Shari and I took some time to go birding together this past weekend. We’ve both birded recently, but we haven’t done a joint birding adventure in months, so we were well past-due. And we had a great time – 12 hours of birding at Forsythe NWR in Brigantine, NJ. Continue reading
