The Great Horned Stare-Down

Marty January 20th, 2006

The Great Horned Stare-DownToday wasn’t a great day for birding - we got a late start, and despite the warm temperatures, not much was out. We were going for ducks at Tinicum, and we’d miss our only good shot at them - but this shot made it all worth it - my best shot yet of a Great Horned Owl.

10 Species

Geek Alert - I’m going to talk about birding - and photography - a LOT.

The other day, I was looking at some contacts’ shots on Flickr when I came across some great shots of Harlequin Ducks, something that I had never seen but was greatly impressed by. The photographer said that he had seen them down at Barnegat Lighthouse, which was relatively close to me and told me where to look. I got a wild hair and asked the wife if she was interested. She said, what the hell, let’s take the dogs and go see what there was to see. The appreciation I got later was overwhelming. Continue Reading »

Youngling Yoda surveyed his neophyte competition at the Jedi Temple: “Hmmmm…Take these little bitches I can.” he mused to himself smugly.

Youngling Yoda.

Fubuki took this shot, which is funny enough - but the title had me rolling. Be sure to check out his other stuff, too.

Dichotomy

Dichotomy

I’m not sure how to feel about my vacation last week. In some ways, it seemed so wrong to be having a good time in N. Topsail Beach while the suffering was going on down in the south. To be honest, many of us were torn between watching the news and seeing what was happening, and salvaging our own much-needed vacation by pushing that away - it would become all too real once we returned to the ‘Real World’. I had a good day of photography yesterday - lots of dragonflies and other insect macros, black vultures and a hummingbird clearwing moth (it actually looks like a hummingbird).

True Bird Geeks Get Interviewed for NPR

Marty August 17th, 2005

I got an email yesterday from someone who wanted to know if I was interested in being interviewed for a program to be broadcast on NPR, and about letting some of my pictures be used for an article related to the show. Of course, I was somewhat excited about it, and said yet. I talked to Vanessa Bertozzi of RadioOpenSource last night, and gave her permission to use some of my pictures.

The article is part of a series they are doing on various ‘passions’ - hobbies and enthusiams that people have. In this case, it is a part of the segment Passions - Birding, about how birders go about their hobby and I assume how it is a growing activity. The part that I was involved with was a focus on Flickr, particularly the one group that I help administer Field Guide: Birds of the World. In the article which is posted, I get quoted and they used one of my pictures - I don’t know yet whether I’ll be involved in the broadcast itself.

Either way, it’s pretty cool to have someone to ask me about my birding, and have some of my pictures reach an audience outside of the Flickr community. I’ll be interested to hear the podcast (although I’ve heard some negatives already about the host).

Busy, Busy

Marty August 3rd, 2005

Life has been quite busy lately - and although I like it, it isn’t without its share of stresses. The plusses: cool project to work on, great experience, good pay, getting lots of great pictures, closing in on vacation. The minuses: long commute most days, working on a new contract for the rest of the year, too understimulated puppies who don’t understand how tired I am at night, Lyme Disease.

Still, things are going up - so what else can one ask for? I should have a new contract in place for the rest of the year by the end of this week, which will reduce stress there - and it’s good because I like where I work and what I’m doing. The project is great - and will look nice on the resume - and giving me a chance to do what I have been wanting to do, and couldn’t get done at MBNA.

I’m having a ton of fun playing with my Nikon D70 as well - I feel better about my photography, and have managed to get some really good shots lately.

All in all, I’m getting less sleep but things are getting better every day…
