Late last year, I entered some of my pictures into a contest sponsored by the National Wildlife Refuge Association. I got a notice yesterday that at least one of my photos had been selected as a winner. Continue Reading »

I’m just trying to catch up now from last week - which was an exhausting one. Work has been brisk without being too nuts for much of the beginning of the year - at least, short sprints and pauses that allowed one to recover. But, of course, when my boss took off for the birth of his baby, suddenly everyone needed some help. Continue Reading »

I saw this on the A Passion For Nature blog and thought I’d play along:
Rules
- Pick up the nearest book.*
- Open to page 123.
- Find the fifth sentence.
- Post the next three sentences.
“At the core of all screen (and print, of course) visual design is layout: where and how the features, controls, and content are placed. Layout provides the structure that these elements reside within. Layout provides hierarchy, letting users know what is important and what is less so - a control that is visible at all times is perceived as more important than one that is buried in a drop-down menu.”
Questions:
- Do you know what book my quote comes from?
- Do you want to play ?
Daily Links
* note: I actually had to pick up 3 books: the first didn’t have 5 sentences on page 123, and the second had an image on that page.

Ah, St. Patty’s Day - a day for corned beef, beer, singing Irish Drinking songs and waking people puke green. How can you not love it. AND if you were an adventurous soul, this could have been a 4-day celebration for you. I’m going to try to get out for at least one beer, although I’m sure that the area around work will be absolutely nuts tomorrow. But maybe a band of my co-workers and I can bust into one of the local joints for a beer…
Good luck and happy O’Beer Day to you all. And if you catch the leprechaun, make sure you make him give up his Lucky Charms. But don’t drink too much green beer, or you could end up like this fella!

Well, it’s been a busy week. After getting increasingly good news about Jim, I’ve been heads down working day and night. Night has been spent working up the HTML and CSS templates for ZeroPercentCards.com, so that Van can work his database and backend magic. Continue Reading »

This weekend started off on a bit of a down note when I found that I could get to sleep Friday night (I didn’t get to sleep until 4 a.m. Friday night). Finally, begrudginly, I got out of bed and went downstairs to do some work, check out Flickr, work - anything that one can do in the middle of the night. But it was a message I got just after 2 a.m. that really put the weekend into perspective. Continue Reading »

Well, after a scare at the end of last week, things took a turn for the better over the weekend. Grandpop was back to his old self (well, at least he was back to having some strength and liveliness), although he did check himself out of the hospital a day early against doctor’s orders. Continue Reading »

I’ve been really wanting to get out birding for a while - a real trip and not a quick run out to a local spot - and on Sunday finally made it up to Sandy Hook where they had been seeing a number of rarities for the area. Unfortunately, the weather and birds didn’t cooperate very well Continue Reading »

We went to an “Owl Prowl” tonight at Palmyra Cove, complete with a introductory session with the ‘demo owls’ as my mother-in-law called them. They had a beautiful red-morph eastern screech owl, a rather aloof Barred Owl and this beautiful western Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus. Continue Reading »

It was Super Bowl time again, and once again I had a hard time caring about either team who was playing. As a Cowboys fan, it’s really tough to root for the Giants. But I found myself doing so anyway because I dreaded the thought of hearing all of the ‘Greatest Team Ever’, “Tom Brady is God” and “19-0″ b.s. for the next year. If the Patriots win (and it’s 7-3 with 6:13 left in the 3rd quarter now), it will be an endless repetition of how great they are. Continue Reading »
