2007 Birding

Marty January 11th, 2008

It was a good year of birding in 2007. I got my lifelist over 300, and added 60 new species (and 9 new sub-species). The highlight of the year was our trip to the lower Rio Grande Valley, where we got to see a lot of new species and had a heck of a time to boot. Continue Reading »

First Lifebird of 2008

Horned Lark - female
Eremophila alpestris alpestris

With the beautiful weather we had here on Tuesday (almost 70 degrees F), my wife and I decided to play hooky and go birding. As we’re apt to do on nice days in January, we went to Barnegat Inlet and Forsythe NWR. Continue Reading »

Eye of Merlin

It’s been a long couple of months, so yesterday the wife and I decided to go out in the freezing cold and … bird (we’re crazy that way). Well, yesterday at Forsythe NWR* it was raptor central. Continue Reading »

Birding Vancouver

Marty November 21st, 2007

Up Close and Personal Well, I’m back now and I have to say that although I didn’t get out as much as I would like, at least I got out a couple of times and I got to see a lot of really cool stuff. On Tuesday, I got to check out a little of Stanley Park, Continue Reading »

Warbling at The Cove

Lincoln's Sparrow

This past Saturday, I finally had a few hours in the morning to get out and do some birding. Almost all of fall migration has gone by and I had yet to see any warblers. Time has been a precious commodity, and so I got up at the crack of dawn Continue Reading »

A day of hooky

Marty September 24th, 2007

Watching Over the Kingdom On Friday, I really needed a mental health day to spend with my wife. I’ve been working a ton of hours, and haven’t been out to do any real photography or birding in weeks. So, on Friday, we headed down to Forsythe NWR @ Brigantine to do some birding. Continue Reading »

Birds and Butterflies and Dragonflies, oh my

Marty July 25th, 2007

(sorry … this one never got posted last week)

One of the main reasons that we went to Cape May for our anniversary was to get in some birding. My wife and I both enjoy getting out there and taking pictures of birds, and Cape May is among the best places to get out and do it. We both had extra agendas (at least in terms of nature) in the form of butterflies and dragonflies, but the birds were the primary focus. There had been quite a bit seen in the area lately, and we figured we would indulge. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see too many new things - but we still had a good time. Continue Reading »

Pretty Lady

Shari and I went to Forsythe NWR on Saturday to meet up with Sylvia and get out for some pictures of birds, bugs and critters. The weather was gorgeous, if a bit windy, but it didn’t stop us from having a good time. Continue Reading »

The Long Weekend

Marty June 13th, 2007

Glad to Meet You, Hearman!

Well, this weekend was a ot of fun, even if it was really tiring. We had some friends (Don and Bobbie) visiting from out of town, and combined with the work I was doing last week on that site for Wharton, I was already tired. We picked them up at 5:30 on Friday night, and didn’t stop until late Sunday night - but it was worth it. Continue Reading »

Of Birds, Moms and Alligators

Palmyra Jewel

This was a strange - but satisfying - weekend. I had a long week at work, and was looking forward to some downtime, but then realized that between work that needed to be done around the house and Mother’s Day, that would be fairly unlikely… but I still had a great weekend nonetheless.
