I finally got out for some birding on Saturday morning at Palmyra Cove. It was a little chilly, and there weren’t any real big migrants there, but I still have a good time. One of the highlights was seeing quite a few Field Sparrows (Spizella pusilla) - a species I had seen before but not yet photgraphed. This little casanova was singing his heart out near the beaver pond. Continue Reading »

Well, after a scare at the end of last week, things took a turn for the better over the weekend. Grandpop was back to his old self (well, at least he was back to having some strength and liveliness), although he did check himself out of the hospital a day early against doctor’s orders. I’ve been really wanting to get out birding for a while - a real trip and not a quick run out to a local spot - and on Sunday finally made it up to Sandy Hook where they had been seeing a number of rarities for the area. We went to an “Owl Prowl” tonight at Palmyra Cove, complete with a introductory session with the ‘demo owls’ as my mother-in-law called them. They had a beautiful red-morph eastern screech owl, a rather aloof Barred Owl and this beautiful western Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus. Continue Reading »

Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) vs.
Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)
This poor Cooper’s Hawk really didn’t make the proper entrance to Forsythe NWR. Every time we’ve seen him, it’s only a minute or two before one or more Norther Harriers swoop in to give him the ‘what for’. Continue Reading »

It was a good year of birding in 2007. I got my lifelist over 300, and added 60 new species (and 9 new sub-species). The highlight of the year was our trip to the lower Rio Grande Valley, where we got to see a lot of new species and had a heck of a time to boot. Continue Reading »

Horned Lark - female
Eremophila alpestris alpestris
With the beautiful weather we had here on Tuesday (almost 70 degrees F), my wife and I decided to play hooky and go birding. As we’re apt to do on nice days in January, we went to Barnegat Inlet and Forsythe NWR. Continue Reading »

It’s been a long couple of months, so yesterday the wife and I decided to go out in the freezing cold and … bird (we’re crazy that way). Well, yesterday at Forsythe NWR* it was raptor central. Continue Reading »
