My Wife, the Professional Photographer

ShariDeangelo.com Well, it’s official – my wife is a professional photographer. We’ve both known that she’s been good enough to do it for a while, but she’s been sitting on the edge of going pro – in some part because of her health and in some part because it is a big deal to go out on your own for this type of thing. It meant giving up her old business and trying something that she had the skills for but would have to build up from scratch. She was nervous about it but recently decided to take the plunge.

Karen’s kids hard at play She’s been doing family portraits at the beach for the last 5 years, and everyone has always liked her stuff. And her studio work is pretty inspired and attractive. But it was a big move to decide that she wanted to focus on professional photography – mostly doing portraiture, but also delving into more artistic stuff as well. For the former, our families have been great, supporting her and offering to sit for her. So far, she’s had chances to photograph some of my cousins and her niece, offering her the chance to get some pictures for her portfolio and some experience. She’s made the most of it.

Erin the Model And she’s pretty damn good too (and that’s not just because she’s my wife). She sees things that I never would in common objects, but her ideas and skills at portraits is amazing. She did some really nice shots of my cousin Karen’s children, not staying with traditional shots, but adding life to the poses and then making the final images really something different. This past weekend, she did a few shots of my cousin Erin, and at times I can barely tell it’s that little girl who was always sticking her tongue out at me.

It’s been great because she’s gotten some really nice shots, while Lexi, Karen and Erin get free sittings. Erin also gets some model experience, in case she wants to go that route. Shari’s work has been great, and impressed even those who were apt to laud her anyway. And Shari got her first sales as a pro when Karen bought some of the pictures – ergo why she’s now a pro. Here are just two examples of her recent work. You can see more on Flickr or on her new website (and no, I didn’t design it – if I had it wouldn’t be coded so poorly. Nested table madness – yikes!).

  • Congratulations to Shari! I’ve always liked her photos, it’s good to see her taking that leap. So when are you going to quit this day job business and run away with her and your cameras? So jealous …

  • Congrats and already a flickr friend on their! Congrats on going pro and Marty . . . . maybe she can start buying some new camera equipment that you can barrow every so often?

  • Wow, that’s very impressive. I wish her the best of luck in this new endeavor. Congratulations, Shari!

  • That’s awesome, congrats Shari. I guess my CD artwork is going to cost me now huh?

  • Thanks – I’m very proud of her. And once she’s successful and famous, I’ll be able to start living the life to which I’d like to become accustomed…

Tom: I already borrow her 105mm when I can, and I’m allowed to borrow her 300mm. I think she’ll be a little more protective of her new 17-55mm lens, though (it’s her main portrait lens).
Van: Nope, that was already ‘under contract’ … just not completed. Speaking of which…

  • I need to stop in here more often. Thanks you guys and thank you, Marty for your unwaivering support (ok, mild waivering).. Means so much!

@Van~ Anytime! I have cooler toys now and ideas.. lots and lots of ideas. Scared yet?

@Sarah~ Only one partner may be insane at a time. This appears to be my year. 🙂
