I’m Batman

Well, softball season has officially begun. We started the season off with an 18-15 win before the game was called on account of darkness. I have to say that the weather seemed more like football weather than softball weather. It was in the low, low 50’s when we first got there but it quickly went down into the low 40’s and eventually into the 30’s by the time we stopped. It was frigid.

But that’s beside the point – at least I’m doing something athletic again. I miss playing organized sports, and this gives me a chance to get to know more people that I work with PLUS play some competitive sports. Well, semi-competitive, I guess. Unfortunately, yesterday was a bust for me personally, because I saw little playing time.

Being a new guy, the coach didn’t know what to expect (tryouts were cancelled last week due to weather), so I was put at the end of the order, subbing in for the 6th and 7th innings. That meant that I was in the field for 2 innings, but I had to wait until the person I was subbing in for in the batting order came up (odd way of doing it, but whatever). I got to play the bottom of the 6th, and was 5th in the batting order of the 6-7 innings subs. But there were still 3 people left from the 4-5 inning group who batted in the top of the 6th, leaving me hungering for my at bat. When the top of the 7th came around, the #2 guy hit a single, and the #3 slammed a massive home run. 2 in, 0 outs – I was guaranteed an at-bat … or I should have been, but that whole calling the game because of darkness thing. *sigh*

But at least I was swinging well in batting practice. 6 good pitches, and I put a long fly to left, a liner into the left-center outfield, drilled a liner through the gap at second and put another shot to right field, so I’ve got my placements down pretty well, and I was hitting them hard and straight. My fielding needs some work – between being rusty and a breaking in a new glove, I was fine catching in the outfield, but trying to do the extended 1B catch was a little rough (luckily I wasn’t actually playing – just warming up).

Next game is Monday, so hopefully I’ll be in the 1st-3rd inning group and can get some hacks this time around. I can’t wait.

  • I have a google news alert set up for dog sex toys …oh said that out loud didn’t I?

  • It’s too bad you didn’t really get an opportunity to play much. That always frustrated me about baseball/softball. I never played competitively, but when I would play, I always felt like I spent most of my time waiting around. Hopefully, you’ll have more opportunities next time.

  • Van, you frighten me, man.

Michael, it’s one of the problems with softball, since it tends to be a more ‘everybody plays’ game. That means, everybody sits, too. My plan – hit early in the batting practice (right before/after the ‘coach’) to get my swings in while he’s watching. How could he not see my Schmidt-like power then?

  • Once out of highschool, I never continued in the sports that I did! I still think the track killed my knees which I am currently having problems with now days! I did play little league baseball but never played in highschool! Time of the year was bad and no one probably would want me on their team now days! LOL
